Land Acknowledgement
I live and work in Hamilton, Ontario. I consider myself a settler who occupies this land. In Kanien’kéha (Mohawk), Hamilton is situated in the Northeast area of Turtle Island known as Ohròn:wakon. The term, “Ohròn:wakon“ means “in the ditch" or "the ravine". This area between the Great Lakes is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum treaty which formalizes an ancient agreement of sharing resources. Ohròn:wakon has been home to many First Nations for millennia, including: the Anishnaabeg (more specifically the Mississaugas), the Haudenosaunee, the Erie, the Huron-Wendat, and the Neutral. I seek to learn more about the cultural history of the land on which I reside. I also hope to better understand the on-going impact of colonial institutions.
